Skincare 101: Building a Routine from Scratch

Skincare can be complicated these days, and it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the products out there. On social media, skincare influencers often show off their extensive routines with multiple layers of products. If you're new to skincare, it can be hard to know where to start. At Seadrop, we understand that skincare is personal, and we're here to help you find the right balance and create a skincare routine that works for YOU.

Understanding Your Skin

One of the most important steps in developing a routine is first getting to know your skin. Is it dry? Is it oily? Is it both, but only in specific places? Does it only become dry during specific times of the year? Is it acne-prone? Is it sensitive and easily irritated by harsh ingredients? These are all questions to start asking to better understand what your skin needs and can actually tolerate. Nothing sucks more than splurging on a product only for it to cause irritation or to just not work. As you're starting out, look for dermatologist tested and allergy tested products to avoid any reactions.

Establish Your Skincare Goals

Maybe you’re looking to control your breakouts, or maybe it’s to give your skin a more radiant and glowing look. Everyone’s reasons for buying certain skincare products are different, which is why there’s so much selection out there. Take a close look at your skin and determine what your skincare goals are whether that be improving texture, moisture, tone, etc. Figuring out what you ultimately want at the end of your skincare routine will make shopping around for products much easier.

Start Simple

Sure, the influencers you follow have 7 steps in their routines, ranging from serums and oils to gua sha tools -- and while that works for them, we guarantee they’ve gone through extensive trial and error to figure out each one of those steps. When you’re just starting out, we recommend keeping it simple. Stick to a 'cleanse, tone, moisturize' routine that gives your skin the most fundamental necessities (such as hydration and dirt-removal). Once you’ve found what works for you, then begin adding more steps and products (one at a time, so you know what’s causing any issues if such arise).

Know What’s Realistic For You

When designing your skincare routine, it's important to consider your individual preferences and daily schedule. For instance, if you're not a morning person, forcing a morning skincare routine may not be realistic for you. It's perfectly fine to use specific products only at certain times, as long as you remain consistent. Building on the previous point, introducing an excessive number of steps too quickly can become challenging to sustain in the long run. There will be days when exhaustion sets in, and even the thought of cleansing feels overwhelming. It's crucial to tailor your routine to your own needs and schedule, ensuring it remains consistent and realistic for you to follow. By doing so, you can establish a sustainable and manageable skincare routine.

With an effective skincare regimen, you’re going to feel more refreshed, healthier, and cleaner. As you're starting out, give our waterless Hydrating Seafoam Cleanser a try. The gentle, plant-based, barrier strengthening formula is a great start to your skincare routine. It comes in a crushable tablet form, so freshly activated each time you use it. With nourishing ingredients like oat oil and hyaluronic acid to hydrate, antioxidant rich blue butterfly pea flower, and papaya enzyme and kaolin to revive, we know you’ll love using every day. At Seadrop Skincare, we believe skincare is not only deeply personal, but also extremely fun. We’re so happy you’ve taken the steps to discover it’s magic and we can’t wait to get started on this skincare journey with you!
